Details

The Spotted Raphael Catfish (Agamyxis pectinifrons) is also called a "talking catfish" because of its ability to make buzzing and clicking sounds by rubbing its spines together. As its name suggests, this catfish is covered with spots. The spots are white and the rest of the body is black. Its body is covered with thick plates that act as armor.

This catfish is nocturnal, and needs a dark hiding place in which to take refuge during the day. It is a scavenger and will eat most foods that it finds at the bottom of the tank. It is a peaceful fish and can be kept with most community species. It is also tolerant of its own kind and can be kept in small groups or singly.

Due to its protective "armor", the Spotted Raphael Catfish can also be kept with small to medium sized more aggressive fish including many types of cichlids. Despite its passive nature, it may eat very tiny fish, such as young fry.

Love the spots

by

These are great fish. Very heard. I bought 2 with my first tank, and they where the only fish i didn't have to replace. They stick to the bottom of the tank and hide win the lights are on

Indestructible

by

I had one of these guys live nearly two decades. One of my oscars used to carry him around in its mouth like a cigar. From time to time I'd lose track of him and think he'd passed, only to spot him swimming around a few days later. I think he concealed himself in the gravel. He did indeed talk when removed from the tank for cleaning, rearrangement, or moving, which I did several times with different water conditions. What a survivor.

Immortal

Had one for 13 years until we moved to another state. Gave it away. Probably still alive today.
