Species Overview

Filefish are found around coral reefs worldwide. Filefish, also known as Leatherjackets, have rough scales and tiny mouths. The first of their two dorsal fins is a spine that can be locked into place. They are related to the "Triggerfish" but are generally much more docile and peaceful in nature. Although they are compatible with most fish of a similar temperament, they are generally not Reef Safe and will pick at corals, polyps, crabs and other invertebrates. They are best kept in a peaceful, fish-only community aquarium. It is recommended that they be kept by experienced aquarists.

Some filefish will not accept commercial diets (pellets, flakes) in the aquarium, but most will accept meaty foods like plankton, clams, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp and similar items. Their small, pointed mouths are designed for picking food items from small holes and crevices on the reef. Small shrimp and crabs may also be seen as food items, and some filefish will also nip corals and polyps.
