Species Overview

Hawkfish make wonderful additions to fish only tanks and reef tanks. They often have unique color patterns, usually with various shades of red. Some aquarists find Hawkfish are very entertaining to watch. They are bold, full of personality and always seem to be watching what's going on around them. They are also relatively disease resistant. These fish are great for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike. They adapt quickly and are relatively easy keep.

Hawkfish are considered Reef Safe as corals are not part of their diet, but you should still be cautious if you plan to keep them with sensitive corals. Hawkfish lack a swim bladder and they frequently perch on rockwork and corals. This may cause physical damage to more fragile coral species. Crustaceans like crabs and shrimp are a big part of the Hawkfish diet, so they are not considered invert safe. They may attempt to eat ornamental shrimp, crabs and much smaller fish. They will eat a variety of foods, including marine pellets and flakes, and freeze dried or frozen offerings. Hawks do not generally cause problems in a community set-up, but keep in mind that Hawkfish may become more territorial and aggressive with age, especially towards other hawkfish.
