Euapta sp. "Medusa Worm" - Medium
Medusa Worms (
Euapta sp.
) are actually types of sea cucumbers. They have long, worm-like bodies. Instead of having suction cup-like tentacles on one surface, the entire body of the Medusa Worm is covered in very sticky cells that help it to hold onto a surface (and the aquarist, if it is touched). Their bodies are usually tan or orange but can vary. The size of the Medusa Worm itself can change as these cucumbers can contract and expand greatly and can fit into even the smallest spaces.
Medusa Worms feed on tiny particulate matter on the bottom of the aquarium and in the rockwork. They are very good at helping to keep the tank clean but are vulnerable to predators like hermit crabs that can eat through their soft tissue. If injured or stressed, Medusa Worms can expel a toxin like many other sea cucumbers that can be very harmful so use caution when choosing tankmates for the Medusa Worm. Though typically small at the time they are sold, Medusa Worms can grow very big and long over time.
