Cerianthus membranaceus "Tube Anemone" - Small
Tube Anemones are somewhat primitive. They have a long, tube-like body and lack a basal disc to attach them to a surface. Their long, slender tentacles surround an 'eye' of petite tentacles inside. They occur in a rainbow of colors, the eye often being a different color.
It is essential that tube anemones be provided with planktonic feedings, occassional meatier feedings, and a thick gravel or sand bed. They excrete a thick mucus layer which collects dust to create a fibrous protective tube, much like a tube worm or feather duster. The sheath protects the soft tube body and provides an anchor for the animal.
These anemones have a very strong sting that can harm tankmates, and they are not safe as a clownfish host, as the clownfish will usually end up as a meal.
