Heliopora coerulea "Blue Ridge Coral" - Small

Blue Ridge Coral (Heliopora coerulea) is an octocoral, a soft coral oddity with a hard skeleton that resembles some hard corals like some Montipora species. Blue Ridge Corals get their name from their calcium carbonate skeleton that is colored blue by the iron salts bond in it. This skeleton is rarely visible as it is covered by the tan or brown tissue of the coral but it can be seen when the coral is broken or fragged. Tiny clear or whitish polyps extend from the brown tissue when feeding.

Blue Ridge Corals feed both by photosynthesis of their zooxanthallae algae and by filter-feeding. They can adapt to a wide range of conditions. Though they do best under moderate to high light, they can adapt to less intense lighting (or lower clarity water) by relying more heavily on feeding on planktonic foods like plankton, oyster eggs, rotifers, baby brine shrimp and similar items.

Carbonate Hardness (dKH) and calcium levels must be maintained higher for Blue Ridge Corals than other soft corals to support its skeletal growth. Carbonate Hardness should be maintained around 8-12 and calcium levels should be about 420ppm or higher, similar to the levels required for most hard corals.
