Carinotetraodon irrubesco "Red-tail Dwarf Puffer"
As its name implies, this puffer features red eyes, a reddish tail, and a mottled pattern across its body, though males and females display different coloration. The over-all general body shape is round and robust, along with large, protruding eyes and a beak-like mouth. This fish has the ability to "puff up" if threatened, though this should be avoided as it stresses the fish. This species only grows to between 2 to 3 inches.
Puffers are carnivorous and may ignore flake and pelleted food. They will thrive on meaty frozen foods like shrimp, as well as freeze-dried plankton and other foods. They love worms and snails, shell and all. The shell actually helps to keep the puffer's "beak" from overgrowing.
Puffers are territorial and should only be kept one per tank- they will usually fight with other puffers. Tankmates should be robust and tough or the puffer will pick them apart. Suitable tank decor would be rocks, driftwood, and tough-leaved plants. Puffers will sometimes uproot plants or chew them up, just for fun.
These cute little fish will survive best in a brackish environment and their health may deteriorate over time if kept in strictly freshwater.
