Protula bispiralis "Coco Worm" - Medium
Coco Worms (
Protula bispiralis
) are "feather duster" worms that create rigid, calcareous tubes instead of the leathery mucus tubes built by other feather dusters to protect their soft body and crown.
The crowns of the Coco Worm can be many colors but are usually red and white. Younger worms may have a "double crown" that looks like two feather dusters in the same tube while older individuals will have one large spiraled crown. Eaech tube grows to about one half to one inch in diameter and is usually mostly straight and white in appearance.
These worms are filter feeders, extenting their feathery crowns to catch floating food particles. They can be target-fed with a wide range of filter-feeder foods. When threatened, the crowns retract into the tube. The crowns may periodically be shed and the worm will regrow a new one.
