Busycon contrarium "Lightning Whelk" - Large
The Lightning Whelk (Busycon contrarium) is native to North America in the Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast. They are "left-handed" whelks, meaning their openings is on the left side when held flat with the opening facing upward. Most other whelk are right-handed, making this species "contrary" and leading to its scientific name. They are brown in color overall with lightning bolt-like stripes, especially in those from warmer waters.
These large predatory snails spend most of their time in the muddy or sandy substrate in search of benthic bivalves, their main diet. They may be fed frozen scallop or clam in the home aquarium. These snails are terrific sand sifters, but they need a large sandy area, and may topple loose rock. These snails are not safe with ornamental clams, scallops or similar tankmates.
