Details

The Tiger Barb (Puntius tetrazona) is the most well-known and notorius of all aquarium barbs. While hardy and easy to care for, it is known as a "fin-nipper", a semi-aggressive fish that bites at the fins of other fish. This reputation is somewhat undeserved, however. Tiger Barbs are peaceful, schooling fish when kept in adequately large schools of at least 5 fish or more and in an adequately-sized aquarium. When kept in a small tank or in smaller groups, these barbs will vent their aggression on other tankmates. While they should still not be kept with long-finned fish, they can be kept in community tanks in large groups.

The natural Tiger Barb is golden-tan with with black stripes - one through the eyes, one at the base of the tail, and two on the body. The fins and mouth are red. Many aquacultured color varieties are also available.

Barbs are popular aquarium fish from the Cyprinidae family, one of the largest in freshwater that also includes other popular fish like Danios and Tetras. Most of the barbs available to aquarists are from the genus Puntius although several others are also found, including Barbus, Garra, Barbonymus, Barilius and others.

The large Puntius genus ranges from tiny 1 f(more...)

VERY AGGRESSIVE

by

i bought this fish as a starter fish to start the biological part of my tank. I am going to have to trade it in to my supplier because it has harrassed and killed 5 of my fish. From my experience it it best kept with other aggressive fish and not the passive fish that i have lost and risk losing with this fish in my tank

Love them

I have nothing but tiger barbs in my tank. They are great to have and watch. I had another barbs kind and that fish was aggressive to them. Maybe he went crazy from being alone from before. But now I have 10 tigers with 1 sucker fish and they play among themselves and don't bother the sucker.

Sweeter by the half-dozen

The tiger barb remains one of my favorite fish, but it's one of several breeds that turns into a gang of hellions if they are not kept in sufficient numbers. You can include true siamese algae eaters and clown loaches as well as several other true barbs in that description.

Six seems to be the sweet spot for the hardy, colorful Tiger barb, but I prefer 10 to 12. You can mix and match with the other color variations, to make up that number (Tigers + Green Tigers, + Albino Tigers, etc.). Even when they are not being terrors, they can't resist long flowing fins, so nothing long or veil tailed should go in with them, and very sedate fish might be upset by their fast moving antics.

They are great in community with other active fast moving fish, and particularly all kinds of barbs and loaches. I had a school that adopted some young clown loaches into their gang, clown loaches having very similar coloring, and also best kept in numbers.

But of course, they look the most stunning in groups of their own. They tend towards swim bladder issues if your water quality is not kept up, but they are fairly tough little guys, and grow fast to a fat 2-2.5" in length.

Nippy

They were fine with all my other fish until i got more and then they got very nippy. i dont know what happened because i was always told they were better in groups.

fast

they are very fast fish they could be aggressive as well. I have a cichlid tank and they are so fast and nippy they get along fine with them.
