The Australian Spider Sponge is a very rare and extremely striking specimen. They are newly introduced into the aquarium trade and not much about them is known, including their actual scientific name and classification. It is generally agreed that the sponge and polyp colony are two seperate species.
The tree-like base of this colony is a reddish sponge. It is encrusted with a white polyp colony similar to Parazoanthus sp. polyps that wrap around the sponge like garland on a Christmas Tree.
Like all sponges, the Spider Sponge should be kept in moderate to high flow to help prevent algae growth and should never be exposed to air to avoid its fine pores from becoming clogged with air bubbles. It should be target fed frequently with planktonic foods and microcrusteaceans like larvae and rotifers.
