Details
Blastomussa is a colorful deepwater coral, usually a combination of red and green. It has large, fleshy polyps and tentacles that extend at night for feeding. It is a fairly hardy coral and will do best with low to moderate lighting and moderate water flow. Blastomussa uses photosynthesis to feed but will readily accept invert foods such as cyclopeeze as a supplemental food.
Two species of Blastomussa corals are typically found in the reef hobby, Blastomussa merletti and Blastomussa wellsi. B. merletti has smaller-sized individual polyps that usually do not individually reach over about 1 inch in diameter. The individual polyps on B. wellsi can grow much larger and have a fleshier appearance, growing to about 4 inch diameter each. The entire coral colonies can be much larger.
