The Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus filamentosus, also called the "Chessboard Cichlid") has a greenish body with lighter underside and is covered by alternating square blotches with a pattern that lends it its common names. Males may also developed a forked lyretail with light edges. These cichlids stay fairly small - only reaching abount 1.5" in length - and are suitable for community aquariums.

These cichlids can be fairly delicate and difficult to get established. They must have slightly acidic conditions (under 7.0 with a lowered pH to trigger breeding) with plenty of leafy cover. They can be sensitive to water quality and fluctuations but are hardy once established in proper conditions. They are micropredators and need a varied diet of small meaty foods and occassionally plant matter supplements. Most will accept flakes and small pellets as well as frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia and similar items.
