Details
Pompano are unusual fish that are rarely found in the aquarium trade, mostly because as adults, they are large and active gamefish. Juveniles and adults both are very active and need a tank with plenty of swimming space to accommodate them. They are silver with rounded, stubby heads (much like Piranha in freshwater). As they mature, some species develop yellow in their fins and sides and they can grow to well over 15 inches in length.
Pompano will not typically harm corals and similar stationary inverts but they will feed on small fish and inverts like shrimp and crabs. They can be fed meaty foods like mysis, brine, scallop, clam and shrimp. As they grow larger, in addition to the space needs to allow for their high activity, they can produce high waste levels and are best in fish-only tanks with ample filtration and forgiving water quality requirements.
