Details

The Redcoat Squirrelfish (Sargocentron rubrum) has reddish-brown and silver stripes, and clear fins with red spines. The edges of the tail and adipose fin are red. The dorsal fin is red with white tips. The pelvic and anal fins are red with white front edges. There are white stripes around the face and red below each eye like tear trails.

These fish are mostly nocturnal and spend most daylight hours in the shadows of rock crevices. They are schooling in many cases, but are also comfortable being housed in single numbers. Squirrels are predatory and they will quickly snatch up small fish and inverts like shrimp and crabs, so consider tankmates carefully. They are safe for reef environments and make interesting additions to reefs free of crustaceans. Feed Squirrelfish frozen or live shrimp, crabs, or other meaty foods.
