Feeding

Omnivorous; will eat algae, coral polyps, copepods, and small crustaceans; some will only eat live foods and are difficult to wean onto frozen or prepared foods

Able to make quick, sharp movements; very active; territorial; picks at live rock; provide plenty of hiding places

Compatibility

Community safe; Invert safe, with caution; not coral safe; best kept one to a tank or in odd numbers (with caution; sometimes in a group of three, two will become a mated pair and usually show aggression towards the third)

Species Overview

Butterflyfish and Bannerfish are beautiful additions to the right marine tank. They have unique body shapes and usually display some variation in yellow, white, and black coloration.

Butterflies can be tricky to feed and maintain, and are not the best choice for beginner aquarists. If you have an established aquarium and you're able to provide the specialized diet required by many of these fish, there are some species that fare better than others in a captive environment.

Pennant Bannerfish and Raccoon Butterflyfish are considered to be some of the hardier and easier species to maintain from this group of fish, and may be good choices when you're ready. If you're considering Butterflyfish for your aquarium, be sure to research the dietary needs of specific species or talk to one of our marine biologists to find the right fit for your aquarium.
