BREED PROFILE – Persian
The Persian breed has been one of the most popular cat breeds in the United States since the late 1800's. The breed dates to at least the 16th Century around Turkey, Iran, and their neighbors but may be linked to records from as far back as 1684 BC. It is one of the favorite breeds of photographers and toy makers and has led many cat owners into the hobby with their fluffy hair and sweet personalities. Persians make excellent pets for owners willing to take the extra time to keep this cat looking and feeling their best.
Their long thick coat and short tail are well suited for the colder mountain climates that they originate from but can make them especially prone to heat stroke in warmer environments. This coat does require regular and thorough maintenance to keep it tangle-free and reduce shedding. Persians should be brushed daily and bathed, dried, and combed regularly to remove loose hair and matted fur. Their eyes should also be checked and cleaned as needed as some cats are unable to keep them adequately cleaned on their own. The flattened nose and muzzle may sometimes cause sinus and breathing problems which should be monitored.
The easy-going nature of this breed makes it a good choice for households with children. Persians will not usually jump or climb and are usually content to drape themselves on furniture (or your lap) when not feeling playful.
For families with children and time to devote to the care of this long-haired and higher maintenance breed, a Persian can provide years of companionship and enjoyment. With a little research and preparation, you may find a perfect Persian to call your own!
