Details
The Spongehead Crab earned its named from its unique camouflage technique. They are small crabs that hold tunicates or sponges on their back and carry them around with them to hide. Unlike hermit crabs that need shells for protection, these crabs only use these sponges or tunicates as camouflage and can live without them if that piece dies or they let go of it.
These crabs are scavengers and will eat a variety of meaty foods and even some plant matter like macroalgaes. Their sponge or tunicate may need to be fed separately; these pieces are usually filter-feeders.
