Details
The Threadfin Acara (Acarichthys heckelii) is currently the only species in its genus. They are related and similar to the Acara's of genus Aequidens. These fish are golden in color with mettalic spots in rows down their sides. The sides of the head and fins may develop some yellow color, and the tips of the dorsal and anal fins become red in mature males. Mature males also develop the long dorsal filaments that lend to the cichlid's common name.
These fish may become territorial as with all cichlids but are otherwise fairly peaceful. They can be kept with a wide range of tankmates, including smaller fish, but may prey on fry and inverts. Avoid keeping with any aggressive fish that may nip at the Threadfin Acara's delicate fins. Juveniles may be kept in groups but adults may become more aggressive, especially in smaller aquariums or with multiple males.
The Threadfin Acara is generally not a picky eater and can be fed a varied diet of fresh, frozen and prepared foods. Flakes and pellets are suitable, as are meaty foods like shrimp, worms and similar items. Some plant matter is also beneficial.
