Details
The hardy Whisker Coral (Duncanopsammia axifuga) is a unique coral that is one of the most flower-like in appearance. They have large fleshy polyps ringed with "whiskers" that extend from each tip on the branching skeleton. Common Whisker Corals are brownish green but some colonies, especially those from Australia, can be bright neon green.
The closest corals in appearance to Whisker Corals would be Sun Polyps (Tubastraea sp.) but unlike Sun Polyps which are strictly nocturnal filter-feeders, Whisker Corals do have photosynthetic zooxanthellae and do need light to survive. Their lighting requirements vary with the needs of the colony however. Brighter neon polyps should be under moderate to high light to retain the bright color; low to moderate light it sufficient for less brightly-colored polyps. Whisker Corals will also filter-feed and can be target-fed with filter-feeder foods like plankton, baby brine and adult brine shrimp, daphnia and similar-sized items. Moderate to high flow is best to carry food items to and waste from the colony.
Whisker Corals are fast-growing under ideal conditions and new polyps will bid out of the sides of existing branches or from the base. They can be "fragged" into new colonies by using a dremel, coral cutters or other sharp implements to cut the new colony from the parent at the base of a branch.
