Details
Although most of their time is spent buried and hidden within the substrate, Nassarius sp. snails are popular snails for aquarium clean-up and maintenance crews. They generally have a conical looking shell and a long trunk-like siphon that is most commonly seen protruding from the sand or gravel. This siphon is used to locate edible food for these amazing animals. In their foraging, they will also help aerate the substrate by constantly moving through it, thus preventing dead spots from forming.
They are harmless to other invertebrates and are a great addition to any reef or fish only tank. They do not actively prey on other tankmates or corals but will feed on any dead or dying animals, leading to the false impression that they have killed the animal. While they will usually scavenge enough food in the aquarium, they can be supplementally fed with meaty foods left on the bottom of the aquarium away from other tankmates that may outcompete the snails.
