Details
Christmas Tree Coral (Studeriotes sp., also known as Medusa Coral or French Tickler Coral) is quite unique. It resembles a tree in shape when extended, and may be colored white, tan or brown. At night, the coral withdraws into its column much like an anemone may withdraw its tentacles. It extends during the day to feed. The base of the coral is buried in the substrate and will grow thin root-like structures to keep itself in place.
These soft corals are not photosynthetic and do not require lighting. They do require planktonic feedings, moderate current, and sufficient trace element levels to thrive. While the coral itself is fairly hardy, its feeding requirements make it fairly difficult to maintain over time.
