Details
Pipe Organ Coral (Tubipora musica) is a soft coral with hard exoskeleton. The exoskeleton is made up of calcareous tubes that are characteristically red to maroon in color. The polyps that extend from them are white, tan, grey or green and look like flowers with feather petals. Very rarely, the polyps may have smooth "petals" or centers of a different color. There are many different shapes and forms of Tubipora musica that some argue may lead to them being separated into different species. Pipe Organ colonies may resemble other corals like Clavularia, Briareum, Pachyclavularia, and Alveopora.
Pipe Organ Corals have zooxanthellate algae that require moderate to high light but they also filter-feed on small particles in the water. While they do benefit from some target feeding and supplements, it is best to keep them in a well-established aquarium with lots of microfauna for them to feed on naturally. They should be in an area with moderate to high flow. These corals do not have "sweeper tentacles" used to sting other corals and are non-aggressive. They may be vulnerable to more aggressive corals as a result and should not be placed near any aggressive colonies.
