Species Overview

Blennies are quite endearing and have a very curious personalities. Some species can be quite useful and are even recommended for controlling algae growth in your saltwater tank, especially those in the Salarias genus (Lawnmower Blenny, Starry Blennies, Red Lip Blennies, etc.)

Blennies are relatively hardy, easy to keep, and have some very entertaining behavioral traits. Well adapted specimens are observant of other fish and activity in and around the tank and may often be seen perched on rock or coral grazing on algae or just to have a good point of view. If you walk by the tank while they are eating, they will probably pause to take notice of you.

Use caution if you plan on keeping a blenny in a reef environment. Some species may nip at coral polyps and clam mantles, so be prepared to remove them if this becomes a problem. Since they are quick to retreat into live rock, removing them can be quite difficult. Some individuals may also become more aggressive as they grow and will not tolerate the same or similar species in smaller tanks. We suggest keeping only one blenny per tank.

We always suggest that you do further research before adding a new pet to your tank. What we have provided for you are guidelines and suggestions. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact our fish room at 717-299-5691 ext. 1213 or marinebio@thatpetplace.com.
