Once they get working and get algae in them the gasses given off get trapped in the sponge and float them up to water's surface. They are useless there. Will have to silicone rocks to the base I guess.

I have been using these in my koi ponds for the past 26 years. Their primary use is to provide oxygen in the winter and keep the ponds from freezing over solid.

Super easy to set up & use. Very effective! For the money, sponge filters are the way to go!
