I had my crowntail betta for over a year. I had one of these for only months before it shorted out and boiled the water - and my beloved buddy. the plastic on the inside of the tank had even melted. we had to throw it away. now, this may not happen to yours, but i would not take the risks.
zoo med betta heater..DONT BUY IT

Doesn't work....i purchased three and in the span of three months they all just stopped working. A better buy is the hydor brand. I have 3 and so far they have outlasted the zoo med brand.

I had this heater for a few weeks. I just came home to a 2.5 tank that was heated to 92.4 F. The product had overheated and melted itself. It also destroyed my tank. The rubber/plastic part is now stuck to the sides of the tank. My betta some how managed to survive. Thankfully, I had a mini tank already fixed/stablized due to a recent water change and was able to to transfer him over to it. Trust me this is not something you want to return home at 9:30 at night to find.

we bought this thing because our betta was the store pet at our flower shop. This thing overheated in the bowl and melted plastic was everywhere. suprisingly, it did't kill the little guy but now he wont eat and is extremely lethargic.

That Fish Place: In response to reviews, we did check with the manufacturer and received the following response:

The decision was made to include a thermostatic shut off on the new Betta Heaters. We did test many of these heaters here in different situations and have not been able to replicate any failures. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
