Details

The Spotted Ctenopoma is a rare relative of gouramis and climbing perches that is only recently gaining aquarium popularity. Their brown, spot-covered bodies help this fish to blend in with foliage and avoid predators in its native environment.

Ctenopoma will usually accept foods like flakes and pellets in the home aquarium, but worm and shrimp-based frozen and freeze-dried foods can also be given to add variety.

A fun oddball

by

I've had one of these guys for a year or so now. He started off very tiny, and is now a solid 5-6 inches. He likes to hide amongst the plants and along the back glass of the aquarium. For the most part he leaves the other fish alone, but I did make the mistake of adding a new fish from the quarantine aquarium a little too soon, and it only lasted a day or two before it ended up in this guy's mouth. Definitely be careful about adding smaller fish; This is an ambush predator, and it can open it's mouth incredibly wide. If a fish can fit in it's mouth, it WILL try to eat it.
