The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish is an elongated fish with a long flat head. The shape of the head gives the mouth a shovel-like appearance. It has an olive to brown back, and this dark color fades to a lighter silvery color on its sides and to white on the belly. Irregular vertical bars and blotches cover the body and fins.

Although an impressive and interesting fish, the Tiger Shovelnose is not appropriate for all aquariums. They require the largest aquariums, 3 gallons or more, due to its very large adult size. It will also eat any tankmate that is small enough to fit in its mouth. Thus only very large fish make appropriate tankmates.

Provide a large tank that allows the fish plenty of room to maneuver and swim. They will accept a diet of meaty frozen foods and in very rare occasions pellet foods.
