Arowana are unique, surface-dwelling predators. Though the most common Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) is native to South America, several other species can be found in South America, Asia, Australia and Africa.
Arowana grow very large and need a large aquarium to accommodate their size. A 150-gallon aquarium is a bare minimum size but a much larger tank is preferred, especially for adults. The tank should have lots of open swimming space, especially around the surface. Artificial plants will provide cover and security and will not harm the fish. Keep a tight fitting canopy on the tank as these fish are strong jumpers and can dislodge a flimsy hood.
Arowanas are primarily surface carnivores (meat-eaters) and are known to have large appetites. They will eat crickets, mealworms, earthworms, and krill. You may feed guppies or beef heart as occasional treats but all foods should be floating or target-fed at the surface. Feeding too much sinking foods can cause deformity and health issues. Remove any uneaten food to prevent it from decomposing and fouling the water.
Arowana may prey on smaller fish and are best kept alone. Some species may tolerate others of the same species but most will not, especially as adults. If the tank is large enough, Arowana can be kept with some bottom-dwellers like stingrays, knifefish, catfish and some cichlids.
