The Ribbon Eel is one of the most unusual eels. It has a very long, slender, ribbon-like body that appears to flow and twist more than most other eels. They are protandric hermaphrodites, meaning they change gender as they mature. Juveniles and sub-adults are black with yellow along the dorsal and head. Mature males change from black to bright blue, and then change to females that are mostly all yellow.
These eels are known proficient escape artists - make sure the tank and any openings are securely closed or covered with netting, sponge or another material!
These eels can be difficult to feed. They may only accept live foods like small shrimp or fish fry at first but should be weaned onto frozen foods if possible. They are also very sensitive to water quality and very delicate. Ribbons Eels are best kept in a species-only tank.
