General Store Questions

That Fish Place-That Pet Place does not offer cats and dogs for sale, but we do have an adoption center operated by Centerville Pet Rescue in our store. We also work with a variety of other local pet rescues to offer adoptable pets on site. Visit our In-Store Events listing page for a full list of Rescue Meet & Greets.

Absolutely! We work with a number of different local pet rescues and frequently hold rescue events and Meet-and-Greets at our store. You can view a list of rescues we work with regularly on the That Fish Place-That Pet Place Pet Rescue Directory page of our website.

Annual dog licenses are available for purchase at our Lancaster, PA retail location (ask a cashier or sales associate for assistance). Please note, they are only forresidents of Lancaster County, PA. If you're interested in learning more about the importance of licensing your dog, or would like to review this year's charges for dog licenses please see this page. Please fill out one (1) form per dog license you are purchasing and present the form at any register.

The Pirate’s Cove Touch Tank is probably the most popular display at That Fish Place-That Pet Place. Gently touch stingrays as they effortlessly glide by and observe other species in the pool as they pick through the sand and explore the broken galleon run aground in the center of the cove. The unique fish-shaped touch tank is a one of a kind, hands-on experience for the whole family, located between the fish room and the information desk in our retail store. Pirate’s Cove is tons of fun for the whole family and it provides us with a venue to properly educate visitors about the amazing creatures it houses. Free feeding shows and question/answer sessions are held each weekend.

Absolutely! We love to see pets of all kinds, and they love to "shop" for their own treats and toys. Please be sure to have your pet leashed and under control during their visit. You are responsible for the actions of your pet for the duration of your time at That Fish Place-That Pet Place. We ask that all pets are fully vaccinated before visiting our store. This is to protect our customers' and employees' pets from communicable diseases like Parvovirus.

Fish Room

All live items are only available in our Lancaster, PA retail store at this time.

You can click on the "Get Notified When Available" link on the webpage for any Out Of Stock item to receive an automated email as soon as it is available again.

Some live items are only available for sale at certain times of the year. Pond stock like koi and comets, for example, are only sold from about May to August or September, depending on the weather and availability.There are also seasonal availabilities on some aquarium plants, and stock may be interrupted during those times of the year (i.e. Microsword, Rose Sword, Radican 'Marble Queen').

Other items like some saltwater invertebrates may be unavailable at some times depending on weather conditions in the areas where they are collected.

Species listed on the site as restriced are not covered by our livestock guarantee. Find a full list of these species on our Restricted Species List. Animals on this list are either very difficult to keep in the home aquarium, or are highly susceptible to loss during transport. These animals should only be kept by the advanced hobbyist or researcher, and beginner level aquarists or aquarists with newly established aquariums (less than six months old) should not purchase any species on this list. In addition to the Restricted Species list, any items not covered by our guarantee policy are labelled with a yellow tag in our retail store Fish Room. We reserve the right to restrict items from our guarantee policy at any time.

Customers ordering any of these animals waive any responsibility on the part of That Fish Place for dead arrivals or animal losses normally covered by our 14-day guarantee.

If you are coming to visit the store and you're interested in something specific, please contact the fish room staff. Items in the fish room may be held for a short time, but the items must be picked up and paid for in the store. You can reach the Fish Room staff by calling 717-299-5691.

Most of our live items are covered by our 14-day Guarantee Policy. Restricted Items are not covered by this policy for any reason. Any losses must be reported to us within the 14-day guarantee period and we do require verification for any losses.

You’ll find over 500 species of tropical marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates, hundreds of exotic corals and coral frags and a huge variety of lush aquarium plants. Click here to learn more about our Fish Room!

Our Fish Room can get very busy on the weekends and the stock can get wiped out. We receive most shipments of fish on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays of each week and new arrivals are usually available by the following evening. If you're looking for something specific, we always recommend giving the store a call before you come in at 717-299-5691.

If you plan on purchasing livestock and you won't be going home right away or you have a long trip, please let the fish room associate helping you know how long the fish will be in transit. We double-bag fish with an oxygen mixture so the aquatic animals you purchase may remain in the bags safely for several hours until you can get them into your tank. Associates can also pack the bags in cardboard or Styrofoam to keep the animals more stable and secure for transport if necessary. Please be cautious about where the bags are placed in your vehicle; avoid direct sun or direct cold air as this can quickly alter the internal temperature of the bags.

Most of the fish and livestock in the fish room are covered by our limited 14-day guarantee. If you should incur a loss, simply bring us an aquarium water sample (at least 8 oz.), the dead specimen (not in your water sample), and your receipt. If you won't be able to make it back to us within the guarantee period, please contact someone in the fish room at (717)-299-5691, or email us at about the loss. If you have something you need to surrender, please call the Fish Room staff at 717-299-5691 before coming in. If we can't take it, we can often recommend another solution for you. Unfortunately, we aren't able to purchase your fish from you.

Our Fish Room can sometimes accept healthy fish but it depends on a number of factors including:

  • Small Pet Corner

    Your favorite furry friends can be found in our Small Pet Corner, the open area in front of our reptile room. We offer ferrets, chinchillas and rabbits ready to be your new pet. We also have a variety of fancy rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs available to choose from every day. Our small pet specialists are here to help you make the choice that is just right for you and send you home with all you need for your special fuzzy little friend.

    Reptile Room

    We offer a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids in our Reptile Room. Carefully furnished habitats provide ideal living quarters for all our inhabitants until you pick them out and take them home with you. Choose from snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles, toads, frogs, newts, chameleons, geckos, tarantulas, scorpions and much more! Our experienced reptile staff is happy to address all your questions and concerns before and after you purchase a new pet. We have detailed care sheets available for every variety of reptile or amphibian that we sell, and we stock all the supplies you need to keep your pets happy and healthy. You must be at least 18 years of age or be accompanied by a parent or guardian to purchase animals from our reptile room.


    A variety of parakeets, finches, and other small birds are available for purchase in our screened Aviary. Our birds have all been quarantined to ensure that they are healthy and disease free before being displayed for sale. Aviary staff will help you get to know your bird before you take it home. Our bird experts can help you find the perfect feathered friend and help you find everything it will need in its new home. We stock the best brand name foods, toys, and supplements for every species. We typically have common pet birds like canaries, parakeets, and cockatiels, but more exotic small birds like lovebirds and conures may also be available from time to time. We do not carry larger parrots.

    We don't carry larger birds like Parrots, Cockatoos or Macaws. If you are looking to adopt one of these birds, we would recommend going through a bird rescue like the Feathered Sanctuary Exotic Bird Rescue, a local organization who has a space located in our store with an entrance in the Fish Room.
